Item Description

Before the Pokémon TCG had expansions, special rarities or full-art chase cards, it had sixteen Base Set holos, and Zapdos was the only Legendary Bird among them. Number 16/102 is a Basic Lightning Pokémon with 90 HP and a pair of thunderous attacks. Thunder hits for 60 but makes you flip a coin, with tails meaning 30 damage to Zapdos itself. Thunderbolt slams for 100, a staggering number in 1999, but forces you to discard every Energy card attached to Zapdos.

That all-or-nothing design captures exactly what made the early game exciting: big numbers, real risk and a legendary Pokémon that felt powerful the moment it hit the table. Ken Sugimori, whose designs shaped the original Pokémon games, illustrated the card, and the Pokédex text sets the mood, describing a legendary bird said to appear from the clouds wielding enormous lightning bolts.

This is the Base Set printing, collector number 16/102, illustrated by Ken Sugimori, a holofoil rare. For collectors building the original 102-card set, chasing the Legendary Birds or rebuilding a childhood binder, it is a cornerstone page from the very beginning of the hobby.
