Item Description

Zapdos does not just hit the Active Pokémon; it calls down a storm on the whole bench. The Fossil holo Zapdos is a Basic Lightning Pokémon with 80 HP and one attack, Thunderstorm, which costs four Lightning Energy and does 40 damage. Then you flip a coin for each of your opponent's Benched Pokémon, dealing 20 damage to each one that comes up heads, while Zapdos takes 10 damage for every tails. It is a gamble with real drama, exactly the kind of coin-flip thunderclap that made early Pokémon TCG games so memorable.

Fossil, released in 1999 as the third English expansion, brought all three Legendary Birds together as holos in one set, with Articuno, Moltres and Zapdos side by side, and for many players they were the cards that defined it. Mitsuhiro Arita, one of the most celebrated illustrators of the original Pokémon TCG, painted this Zapdos, and his early work is a cornerstone of the vintage era. The Pokédex text adds a sense of myth, describing a thunderbird whose anger is said to cause storms and that may have lived above the clouds for thousands of years.

This is the Fossil printing, collector number 15/62, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, in holofoil. With Fighting resistance and a Retreat Cost of two, it still holds its own in a casual vintage deck, and it makes a natural centerpiece beside its two feathered siblings on a Fossil binder page.
