Item Description

Few fighters in video game history are as instantly recognizable as Zangief, the hulking, mohawked wrestler from Street Fighter II whose whole game plan is getting his hands on you. Magic's Secret Lair x Street Fighter drop turned the Red Cyclone into a black-red-green legendary creature, and the design plays exactly like a grappler. Five mana buys a 7/4 Human Warrior that must be blocked if able, so your opponent has no choice but to step into the ring.

On your turn he is indestructible, which means those forced blocks almost always go his way. Then comes the finishing move: whenever he deals damage to a creature that was dealt excess damage this turn, that creature's controller sacrifices a noncreature, nonland permanent. With seven power slamming into whatever blocker they offer up, the excess damage comes easily, so each attack can strip away an artifact, enchantment or planeswalker on top of the creature that tried to stop him. He makes a bruising Jund commander for combat-first players and a fearsome top end for any three-color deck that wants threats demanding an answer.

This is the Secret Lair Drop printing, collector number 435, in foil, with artwork by Maria Zolotukhina. Released in February 2022 as part of Magic's Universes Beyond crossovers, it is listed in Magic's rules database under the Oracle name Maarika, Brutal Gladiator, but this printing carries Zangief's name and his Street Fighter identity.
