Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

The Dark Tournament is the stretch of Yu Yu Hakusho that hooked a whole generation of Toonami viewers: Yusuke Urameshi, the delinquent turned Spirit Detective, dragged with his friends into a demon martial-arts competition where losing can mean dying. Most games would turn that into a fighter. Tournament Tactics went the other way and made it a grid-based strategy RPG for the Game Boy Advance.

You field a team of up to five fighters on battlefields drawn from locations in the show, moving them square by square, lining up attacks and exploiting your opponents' weaknesses. Characters earn experience, level up and unlock special spirit attacks, and the missions mix things up beyond simple brawls: holding out until demon-spawning floodgate statues are destroyed, racing a party member to a target square against the clock, or chasing down a turtle demon in a tracksuit before he escapes. New areas unlock as you go, and the link cable lets two players battle each other and trade items.

Honesty matters here: critics were rough on it at release, and it plays slow and deliberate, with small maps and units that cover only a few squares a turn. What it offers instead is a curious piece of Yu Yu Hakusho history. Developed by Sensory Sweep Studios and published by Atari as the follow-up to Spirit Detective on the GBA, it is a tactics game built on an anime most people only know through fighting games, and dedicated players who max out every character unlock a post-game scenario featuring the Saint Beasts.

On a shelf of Yu Yu Hakusho games it is the odd one out in the best way, and for strategy fans curious about the GBA's stranger licensed experiments, it is a conversation piece with real character.
