Item Description

Early Yu-Gi-Oh! video games such as Forbidden Memories played by rules of their own, and players who had spent their lunch money on booster packs could tell. The Eternal Duelist Soul was different. Konami adapted the physical card game's Expert rules for the Game Boy Advance, so the decks you built and the plays you made felt like the ones you were making across a real table.

The card pool runs past 800 cards, and the game hands them out in ways that keep you coming back. Duels win you packs, a weekly in-game magazine adds free cards, and an in-game calendar moves day by day and triggers events as time passes. Your opponents are modeled on characters from the anime, unlocking in new sets as you rack up wins, so the field keeps getting tougher while your deck gets sharper. The best touch for collectors is the password system: type in the eight-digit code printed on a physical card and a copy joins your digital collection, which turned every binder into a cheat sheet. A head-to-head mode lets two players duel each other over the link cable.

It was well received when it reached North America in 2002, with a Metacritic score of 81, and TechTV called it by far the best Yu-Gi-Oh! game to reach American shores at that point. Critics mostly knocked the thin story, which says a lot about where the game's priorities were: dueling first, everything else second. In Japan it was Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 5 Expert 1, and Konami thought enough of it to bring it back in the 2025 Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection.

On original GBA hardware, it is a time capsule from the peak of the duel-disk craze and a surprisingly pure deckbuilding sandbox, built around the same cards a lot of players still have tucked away in shoeboxes.

About the game

Yu-Gi-Oh! The Eternal Duelist Soul is a Yu-Gi-Oh! video game for the Game Boy Advance. It is the international version of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 5 Expert 1. Gameplay is similar to standard dueling rules, except that the Side Deck allows less than 15 cards, and is more for convenience of getting to cards for your Deck than switching between duels, as CPU duels are single duels rather than matches (with some exceptions in events).
