Item Description

It is 1485, the Wars of the Roses are raging, and someone has just summoned you from the present day to win them with a deck of Duel Monsters. Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses is one of the strangest and most ambitious games in the franchise's history, a strategy RPG that recasts Yugi Mutou as Henry Tudor of the Lancastrians and Seto Kaiba as Christian Rosenkreuz, leader of the Yorkist forces. Konami released it in Japan in 2001 and in North America in 2003.

Instead of the familiar card table, every duel takes place on a 7x7 grid that plays more like chess. Your Deck Leader sits on the board as a piece that can move and be attacked, and monsters are summoned onto spaces and marched across the field to fight. Terrain changes everything: forest, meadow, sea, mountain, wasteland and dark tiles raise or lower a monster's attack and defense by 500 points, Toon terrain weakens anything that isn't a Toon, Crush destroys monsters under 1500 attack, and Labyrinth walls block movement. A duel ends when life points run out, when a leader is completely surrounded at the end of a turn, or after 99 turns.

Deck building runs deep. More than 800 cards from the franchise appear in the game, decks hold 40 cards and must stay under a cost limit set by each opponent, and Deck Leaders gain rank-based abilities once promoted, such as boosting nearby monsters or moving an extra space. Win a duel and you can claim cards from your opponent's graveyard through a slot-machine style draw, while Reincarnation trades one card for three random ones. The difficulty is steep, and critics at the time often called it unforgiving, but that challenge is a big part of why its players still talk about it.

The story offers a real choice. Side with the Red Rose Lancastrians or the White Rose Yorkists, and your opponents and ending change to match. Each side holds eight rose cards, and you need all sixteen to return home, while Rosenkreuz wants them for a forbidden summoning. The game sold more than 1.3 million copies across the United States and Europe, and nothing else in the franchise's long run of video games plays quite like it.
