Item Description

The passenger ship Lombardia goes down, and Adol Christin, the red-haired adventurer at the heart of Falcom's long-running Ys series, washes up on the Isle of Seiren, a cursed island that sailors swear no one leaves. What follows is part survival story, part mystery and all action RPG, and many fans consider Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana the series at its very best.

Exploration drives everything. Adol starts out alone on the beach, but every stranded passenger he finds joins a growing castaway village, and each new resident opens up something useful, from crafting and trading to new routes through the jungle. Blocked paths, cliffs and swamps slowly open as the village gains manpower and Adol gains new traversal abilities, so mapping every corner of the island becomes compulsive. Along the way you'll meet the noblewoman Laxia, the boisterous sailor Sahad, the quiet mercenary Hummel and Ricotta, a wild girl who has been living on the island for years. Lurking in the interior are the Primordials, enormous prehistoric creatures that turn the island into something closer to a lost world adventure.

Combat is fast and fluid. You control one of three active party members and can switch between them on the fly, matching slash, strike and pierce attacks to enemies that are vulnerable to each. Perfectly timed dodges and blocks, Flash Move and Flash Guard, slow time or grant brief invulnerability, so the best players fight with a rhythm that feels great once it clicks. Periodic raids force the castaways to defend their village from waves of beasts, a change of pace that makes the settlement you have built feel worth protecting.

Then there is Dana, a mysterious girl who appears in Adol's dreams. Her chapters are played from her own perspective in a different era, and as the two stories braid together the game becomes far more ambitious and emotional than its shipwreck premise suggests. Falcom Sound Team jdk's soundtrack is a rush of rock-driven anthems and quieter, haunting pieces. First released in Japan in 2016, it reached the West on PlayStation 4 in 2017 through NIS America, which later reworked its English script after fan feedback. If you have never played an Ys game, this is a fantastic place to start.
