Item Description

Adol Christin never hesitates. In Ys: The Vanished Omens the red-haired swordsman reaches the land of Esteria, sealed off from the outside world by a mysterious storm, and before long he is charging headlong into its monsters, its ruins and the legend of the six Books of Ys. Charging is the right word, because this is the game that turned running into enemies into a combat system.

There is no attack button. Adol strikes simply by walking into foes, and the angle matters: catch an enemy off-center, from the side or from behind and he cuts through it, but meet a stronger monster head-on and Adol can be the one who falls. It sounds odd on paper and feels wonderful in practice, turning every fight into a quick dance of positioning that keeps the pace high and the leveling brisk. Gold and experience pour in, Adol grows stronger fast, and each new sword, shield and suit of armor from the shops makes a visible difference as you push deeper.

Esteria is compact but full of character. The town of Minea is where the fortune teller Sara sets Adol on his path, and two mysterious silver-haired girls, Feena and Reah, turn out to be bound up in the secret of the Books. The quest winds through a shrine and an abandoned mine before the long ascent of Darm Tower, a tense, multi-floor finale that tests everything you have learned about angles and timing.

Nihon Falcom's original first appeared on Japanese computers in 1987, with music by Yuzo Koshiro and Mieko Ishikawa that fans still celebrate, and Sega's Master System version brought the adventure to North American consoles in 1988. That gave American players an early introduction to Adol, years before Ys grew into a long-running action RPG series that is still releasing new entries today. It is short by modern standards and can be finished in a few evenings, which is part of its appeal: a tight, focused quest that shows exactly where the Ys formula began.

About the game

Ys: The Vanished Omens is an action role-playing game with its own trademark combat system: instead of pressing the "attack" button, the protagonist simply runs into the enemies he encounters. More damage is inflicted upon the enemies if Adol charges at them from the back or from the sides - a head-to-head collision might result in the hero's death if the monster is stronger than him. The player gains gold and experience points for defeating foes; once enough experience has been accumulated, Adol levels up and becomes stronger. The hero can buy and equip swords, armor, shields, and other accessories.
