Every Yoshi fan knows the sound: Baby Mario knocked loose, floating away in a bubble and wailing while the star countdown ticks toward zero. Yoshi's New Island brings that particular brand of panic to the 3DS as a follow-up to the Super Nintendo's Yoshi's Island. The stork has delivered the twins to the wrong parents, and on the way to fix the mix-up Kamek ambushes him and carries off Baby Luigi. Baby Mario tumbles onto Egg Island, where a team of Yoshis takes him on a stage-by-stage relay to rescue his brother from Baby Bowser.
The classic toolkit is all here: the flutter jump that buys a crucial half-second of air, the ground pound, and aim-and-throw egg shots that bank off walls to hit switches, clouds and enemies. New Island's big addition is scale. Swallow an enormous Mega Guy and Yoshi produces a Mega Eggdozer, a boulder-sized egg that plows through pipes, walls and anything else in its path, racking up extra lives as the destruction piles up. Metal Eggdozers do the opposite, weighing Yoshi down so he can walk along the bottom of the water. Whirly Gates send him into tilt-controlled transformation courses, steering as a jackhammer or a submarine by turning the 3DS itself, and a Yoshi Star turns him into Super Yoshi, racing along walls and ceilings.
Each of the six worlds holds eight main stages, and every stage keeps the series' traditional checklist of 20 red coins, five Smiley Flowers and a full 30-star timer at the goal. Finding everything in a world unlocks special stages, which gives completionists a reason to poke at every suspicious wall and cloud. The pace is gentler than the 16-bit original, and the game quietly looks out for struggling players: fail a stage a few times and Mr. Pipe offers Flutter Wings for free flight, with an invincible golden pair if things get really rough. That makes it an easy first platformer to hand a younger player, while finishing the adventure without ever reaching for the wings is a challenge of its own.
Developed by Arzest alongside Nintendo, New Island drew mixed reviews, with some critics wishing it had pushed the formula further, but it sold strongly on the 3DS, and its soft pastel art makes good use of the system's stereoscopic depth, with backgrounds layered behind the action. It is the 3DS chapter of the Yoshi's Island line, a cheerful, low-pressure platformer built for handheld sessions, and a fine excuse to hear Baby Mario cry all over again.
Yoshi and Baby Mario are back in Yoshi's New Island, the third installment in the beloved franchise. The series' fun game-play mechanics such as Yoshi's Flutter Jump, Ground Pound and Egg Throw return, but now Yoshi knows a ton of new tricks too. Yoshi gets to bash and thrash his environment by throwing around Mega Eggdozers and Metal Eggdozers. Yoshi also can transform into a variety of objects, such as a jackhammer or a submarine, both of which can be manipulated using the Nintendo 3DS gyro controls. A certain type of star even transforms him into Super Yoshi, giving him the ability to fly through the sky or run along walls and ceilings. Players who are having trouble completing a level might see the appearance of Flutter Wings, which let Yoshi fly through the air.
