Item Description

Yoshi's Island looks like it was drawn with crayons and pastels on the pages of a picture book, and that hand-sketched charm comes through beautifully on the Game Boy Advance. This is Nintendo's handheld remake of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, the 1995 Super Nintendo game, and it opens with a stork, a kidnapping and a pair of twins. Kamek swoops in and snatches Baby Luigi in mid-flight, Baby Mario tumbles down onto Yoshi's Island, and a relay of different-colored Yoshis carries him stage by stage across six worlds to get his brother back.

Yoshi plays nothing like Mario, and that is the joy of it. He flutter-jumps to stretch a leap, gulps down enemies and turns them into eggs, then aims and throws those eggs with a sweeping cursor, banking shots off walls to pop coins, clouds and switches you can't otherwise reach. Take a hit and Baby Mario floats away in a bubble, wailing, while a star countdown ticks toward zero, which is exactly as stressful as it sounds. Morph bubbles turn Yoshi into a helicopter, a submarine, a mole tank or a train for short stretches, and the bosses are often ordinary enemies that Kamek's magic inflates to enormous size, a gag the game keeps finding new ways to play.

The GBA version adds six new Secret stages that open up after you defeat Baby Bowser, bringing the total to 60 levels, and it reworks several existing stages along with every Extra stage. Yoshi picks up the voice clips from Yoshi's Story, and the art is tuned for the handheld screen with a lighter palette. Every stage is scored out of 100 for collecting all 20 red coins and five smiley flowers and finishing with a full 30 stars, so perfectionists have a long, rewarding chase ahead of them. Like the rest of the Super Mario Advance series, the cartridge also carries a remake of the arcade Mario Bros. with link-cable multiplayer.

Critics adored it all over again in 2002, and it sold roughly 1.6 million copies in the US, earning a reissue under the Player's Choice banner, the label Nintendo gave its top sellers when it brought them back at a lower price. Between Koji Kondo's bouncy themes, the storybook art and levels that hide secrets in nearly every cloud, this is the portable way to play Yoshi's finest hour, with content the Super Nintendo original never had.
