Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Most platformers ask you to move the hero. Yoshi Topsy-Turvy asks you to move the world. A tilt sensor built into the cartridge reads how you hold your Game Boy Advance, and turning the system rotates Yoshi's surroundings, sending enemies rolling, setting ships and pendulums swinging, turning impassable walls into slopes and rolled-up carpets into platforms.
The setup is pure storybook. After Bowser wreaks havoc on Yoshi's Island, the book spirit Hongo traps the whole island inside a picture book, and Yoshi has to work through its chapters and lock Bowser away to win his home back. Each course is ruled by a spirit with its own obsession, and that spirit sets the goal: collect enough fruit, beat the clock, gather coins, or defeat or avoid a set number of enemies. Yoshi still jumps and flicks out his tongue, though eating an enemy produces a puff of air instead of an egg, and freeing Egglings by collecting fruit gives you something extra to chase.
It came from Artoon, the studio founded by Sonic the Hedgehog co-creator Naoto Ohshima, and in Japan it carried the wonderfully literal title Yoshi's Universal Gravitation. Critics were split, praising its colorful storybook look and inventive premise while finding the tilt controls tricky and the objectives repetitive, so it is best approached as a bold experiment rather than a successor to Yoshi's Island.
That experimental streak is exactly what makes it interesting today. Motion-sensing cartridges were a rare breed on Nintendo's handhelds, alongside the likes of WarioWare: Twisted! and Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, and here the whole trick lives inside the game cart itself. It is a charming curiosity for Yoshi fans and an early taste of the motion control Nintendo would later build an entire console around.
In Yoshi Topsy-Turvy, Yoshi Island has been turned into a picture book. Yoshi will not stand for this outlandish attempt at flattening his world, and he heads off on an adventure to return things back to their original state. To help in on his quest, a group of spirits who like to surprise people give Yoshi the ability to rotate the world to his liking. The big catch with Yoshi Topsy-Turvy is its use of a motion sensor, similar to the one set to be featured in the second Wario Ware GBA game. The game cartridge includes a built in motion sensor which detects how you move the GBA system. By turning the system, you make the world rotate. A meter on the upper right corner of the screen shows which way the system is being held at any time. Rotate the system to help Yoshi stay on the path and make it past perils and through the varied stages. Go full tilt! By tilting your Game Boy Advance, you'll tilt the environment around Yoshi, knocking over enemies, swinging pendulums, and letting Yoshi run up walls and leap huge pits! Will this ending be happy? All of Yoshi's Island is trapped in a storybook, and only by meeting the challenges of each chapter will you succeed.
