Item Description

Game Freak's history with Nintendo starts here, years before Pokémon, with a fast little puzzle game built around Mario's dinosaur partner. Satoshi Tajiri directed it, Ken Sugimori came up with the concept, Junichi Masuda wrote the music and Shigeru Miyamoto served as a producer, and smaller projects like this one helped keep the studio going while it worked toward the much bigger RPG it was dreaming about.

The idea is simple and instantly addictive. Goombas, Boos, Bloopers and Piranha Plants tumble down four columns, and Mario, standing at the bottom of the screen, swaps neighboring stacks so that matching enemies land on each other and vanish. Halves of Yoshi eggshells fall too, and they are where the real scoring lives: drop a top half onto a bottom half and a Yoshi hatches, and if you have sandwiched a pile of enemies between the two shells, a bigger Yoshi pops out and the points climb. Building a tall stack of monsters while the columns creep toward the top is where the tension comes from, and the urge to try for one more enormous hatch is hard to resist.

An endless high-score mode and a round-based mode that starts each stage with a fuller board give it structure, and a two-player versus mode turns it into a head-to-head race on the same console. Masuda's bouncy music keeps the pace light even as the stacks get dangerous.

Released on NES and Game Boy at the same time, it was the first game to carry Yoshi's name in the title, barely a year after his debut in Super Mario World, and European players know it as Mario & Yoshi. The NES version brings it to the big screen with room for a friend on the couch. It is a smart pick-up-and-play puzzler on its own merits and a fascinating first chapter in the story of the studio that would go on to create Pokémon.
