There is a Yo-kai behind every small mystery of everyday life: the homework you forgot, the rude remark that slipped out, the sudden craving for a snack. Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits picks up Level-5's monster-collecting RPG after its breakout first game and sends Nate Adams, or Katie Forester if you prefer, back into the neighborhood with the watch that lets them see those mischievous spirits. Whisper, the know-it-all ghost butler, and Jibanyan, the cat Yo-kai with a grudge against trucks and a weakness for chocolate bars, return for an adventure that grows in every direction.

The story is the big step up. Teaming up with Hovernyan, a heroic cat Yo-kai, Nate travels sixty years into the past to an older Springdale and witnesses the origin of the Yo-kai Watch itself. The present day expands too: a train network opens up new places to explore, from quiet countryside to a seaside town, each one packed with hidden Yo-kai, side quests and secrets.

Battles keep the series' distinctive wheel. Six Yo-kai sit on a rotating dial, three fight at a time, and you spin it to bring fresh allies to the front. Your job is to support them from the touch screen, purifying an inspirited friend, unleashing a Soultimate through a quick minigame, or hunting for the sweet spots on an enemy that boost your odds of befriending it. Offering a Yo-kai its favorite food before a fight sweetens the chances further, and when one joins you, its medal lets you summon it at will.

Bony Spirits has its own set of version-exclusive Yo-kai, which made it the natural trading partner for Fleshy Souls when the pair arrived. With more than 350 new and returning Yo-kai to find, Crank-a-kai capsules to spin and a Medallium waiting to be filled, it is a creature collector built for completionists. It shows Level-5's series at its most expansive on the 3DS, with a story that gives the whole franchise a history worth knowing.

About the game

Much like its predecessor, Yo-kai Watch 2 is an open world role-playing video game, where the player is given control of player character Nathan Adams, or alternatively, Katie Forester. Players navigate around the open world using the Nintendo 3DS' touchscreen to find and befriend various Yo-kai, which are scattered across the overworld. Players befriend Yo-kai by giving them a food that they like before beginning battle, and after defeating the Yo-kai it approaches the player character and gives them its Yo-kai Medal, allowing it to be summoned at will. A new feature in battles is using the touch screen to find a particular sweetspot on an enemy Yo-kai to increase the likelihood of befriending it at the end of the battle, or other sweetspots for extra damage, extra money, or extra experience. Yo-kai can also be acquired through an in game Crank-a-kai (Gasha Machine) by collecting in-game coins or using Play Coins. Certain Yo-kai are necessary for completing the game's main quest, and special rare Yo-kai are acquired through various subquests.
