Item Description

Somewhere in Springdale, friends are bickering for no reason, a neighbor can't stop blurting out secrets, and a red cat keeps hurling himself at passing trucks at the same intersection. In Yo-kai Watch, none of that is an accident. Level-5's 3DS adventure hands a kid a watch that reveals the mischievous spirits behind life's small annoyances, and the moment Whisper, a self-appointed ghostly butler, pops out of a capsule machine in the woods, an ordinary suburb turns into a neighborhood full of secrets.

Hunting those spirits down is half the fun. Sweep the Yo-kai Lens across a rustling bush, a vending machine or the gap under a parked car and something might be hiding there. Battles run in real time while you manage the team from the touch screen: six Yo-kai sit on a wheel, three fight at once, and a quick spin rotates tired or inspirited allies to the back. Your own role is hands-on, tapping, tracing and spinning through quick touch-screen minigames to purify allies and charge their Soultimate Moves. Toss a Yo-kai its favorite food in the middle of a fight and the odds improve that it will walk up afterward, offer its Medal and join your side.

Springdale is the real star. It is a dense, lived-in town of schoolyards, shopping streets and back alleys, and it changes with the clock: stronger Yo-kai come out after dark, and Terror Time drops you into a twisted nighttime version of the neighborhood where a hulking oni gives chase while you scramble for the exit. Between story chapters you can fish, catch bugs, pedal around on your bike and take on favors for neighbors whose problems almost always turn out to be supernatural. The roster of more than two hundred Yo-kai is a parade of puns and sight gags, from Jibanyan, the cat with a grudge against trucks, to Komasan, the wide-eyed lion-dog lost in the big city, to Manjimutt, a dog with a middle-aged man's face and a lifetime of regrets.

In Japan the game set off a full-scale craze, with an anime, toy watches and collectible medals following close behind, and the 2015 Western release brought that energy to 3DS owners here. This is where the series begins: the first meeting with Whisper and Jibanyan, the original Springdale story, and the creature-collecting twist Level-5 built an entire franchise on. If catching monsters has always appealed but you want something stranger, sillier and more neighborhood-sized, this is the game that sent a whole country Yo-kai crazy.
