Item Description

You are a Yar, a mutated housefly with a grudge, and on the far side of the screen the Qotile waits behind a pulsing shield of cells. Chew through that shield or chip at it with energy missiles, and the Zorlon Cannon appears on the left edge, tracking your every move up and down. Fire it, then get out of the way, because the cannon's blast will take out a careless Yar just as surely as the Qotile. Meanwhile a Destroyer Missile homes in on you without pause, and at any moment the Qotile can transform into the Swirl and spin across the screen straight at you.

Running down the middle of the playfield is the Neutral Zone, a shimmering band of colorful static where the Destroyer Missile cannot reach you but you cannot fire either. Ducking in and out of it becomes the rhythm of the whole game: dart out, nibble, dodge, retreat, line up the cannon, strike. Each successful hit triggers a screen-shaking explosion effect that felt enormous on a 2600, and the low, buzzing hum of the Yar's wings sets a mood unlike anything else on the console.

Yars' Revenge was Howard Scott Warshaw's first game for Atari. It began as a planned conversion of the arcade game Star Castle, and Warshaw reworked it into something entirely his own; the name famously comes from Atari president Ray Kassar's first name spelled backwards. The Neutral Zone's static was generated from the game's own program code, a clever trick for squeezing striking visuals out of very little memory. It became Atari's best-selling original title for the 2600, and the series has returned in later revivals, including WayForward's 2024 Yars Rising.

Yars' Revenge was designed around the 2600's limits instead of fighting them, which is why it still plays so well on original hardware. It is fast, strange and immediately readable, and it is the game to show anyone who assumes the 2600 library was all simplified arcade ports.
