Tokyo, December 1988. Japan's bubble economy is at its most outrageous, cash is changing hands in nightclubs like confetti, and a young yakuza named Kazuma Kiryu has just been framed for a murder committed on a tiny vacant lot in Kamurocho. That scrap of land turns out to be worth a fortune, and half the Tojo Clan wants it. Yakuza 0 rewound Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's crime saga to its very beginning, and many longtime fans point newcomers here first because it needs no history to hit hard.
Across the country in Osaka's Sotenbori district, Goro Majima is serving a very different sentence. Cut off from the clan, he runs The Grand, a glittering high-end cabaret, while waiting for a way back in, until he is ordered to kill a target named Makoto Makimura who turns out to be a blind young woman. The two stories alternate chapter by chapter and slowly tighten around each other. The Majima you meet here is a coiled, wounded man rather than the wild card of later games, and watching how he becomes that legend is half the reason the game is so loved.
The streets double as a playground. Kiryu switches between Brawler, Rush and Beast fighting styles, Majima between Thug, Slugger and Breaker, and each can uncover a hidden fourth style later on. When the fists stop flying, the 1980s take over: disco dancing, karaoke, Pocket Circuit racing and a Club Sega arcade stocked with real Sega classics like Out Run, Space Harrier and Super Hang-On. Kiryu can build a real estate empire and Majima can turn a struggling cabaret club into the hottest spot in town, two management side games that have swallowed countless weekends. The substories swing from touching to completely absurd, and that collision of crime drama and comedy is the series' signature.
The Director's Cut arrived as a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title in June 2025, and it is more than a straight port. It adds never-before-seen cutscenes that deepen key incidents and character backstories, offers an English voice cast alongside the original Japanese performances, and introduces Red Light Raid, a cooperative brawling mode with sixty playable characters drawn from across the game. Carrying all of Kamurocho and Sotenbori in your hands is a wonderful thing for a game this dense, and there has never been a richer version of the story that started it all.
Yakuza 0: Director's Cut is the definitive edition of the critically acclaimed prequel to the Yakuza series. Director's Cut content gives deeper insight into key incidents and character backstories with never-before-seen cutscenes and enhanced features like English and Chinese voiceovers, and multi-language text support. Plus, the Red Light Raid online multiplayer mode lets you join forces with friends and choose from 60 playable characters to take down hordes of enemies.
