Item Description

Also sprach Zarathustra, Thus Spoke Zarathustra: Monolith Soft closed its Nietzsche-titled trilogy with the most confident entry of the three. The story begins a year after Episode II. Shion Uzuki has walked away from Vector Industries after learning how deeply the company is tied to the appearance of the Gnosis, and she now works with Scientia, an underground organization determined to expose Vector's secrets. It is a darker, more decisive Shion, and the game builds toward answers rather than new questions.

The cast is joined by T-elos, an anti-Gnosis battle android built to replace KOS-MOS, and their rivalry is a highlight. Abel's Ark looms over the galaxy, a landmass from Lost Jerusalem, the long-abandoned Earth, becomes a central mystery, and the true nature of Miltia is finally laid bare. The game carries over three hours of cinematics, and the in-game Xeno Bible database keeps the saga's dense terminology and history at your fingertips, a real help if you played the earlier episodes years ago.

This is the series' combat at its sharpest. Three characters fight at once, with reserves rotating in at the cost of a turn. A Break gauge fills as you hit an enemy; max it out and the target is stunned for two turns and open to critical attacks. The Boost gauge can grant two actions in a single turn or fuel character-specific specials, and finishing a foe with a special attack earns bonus experience, money and skill points. E.S. mech battles follow similar rules, adding an Anima Mode that raises attack power. A deeper customization system rewards careful party building, and a mini-game with more than 50 levels offers a diversion between story beats.

Xenosaga was originally planned as six episodes before Monolith Soft condensed it into three, and Episode III had to carry the weight of that change. It does so with style. Critics praised its narrative and battle system, Yuki Kajiura scored the entire game, and the ending ties together threads that began aboard the Woglinde in Episode I. It never received a European release, so in the West it arrived only on the North American PlayStation 2. If you started this journey with Shion and KOS-MOS, this is where their story lands.
