Item Description
Few RPGs have ever tried to say as much as Xenogears. Square's 1998 epic, directed by Tetsuya Takahashi, opens in the quiet mountain village of Lahan, where Fei Fong Wong, a young painter with no memory of his past, lives a peaceful life. Then a battle between giant war machines called Gears spills into the village, Fei climbs into one, and what follows sends him on a journey that touches religion, psychology, memory and the nature of humanity itself.
Fei's companions are as memorable as the questions the story asks. Citan Uzuki is the village doctor who clearly knows more than he lets on, Elly is an officer of the mysterious nation of Solaris who finds herself on the wrong side of a war, and Bart is a swashbuckling desert pirate with a lost throne to reclaim. The world widens from the long war between the nations of Aveh and Kislev to secrets buried deep in the planet's history, and the script rarely talks down to its players.
Combat comes in two flavors. On foot, characters spend action points on strings of Triangle, Square and X attacks, and practicing those strings teaches new Deathblows, devastating martial-arts finishers. Inside a Gear the scale changes completely: battles become clashes of towering mechs where every attack burns fuel, so managing that tank matters as much as landing hits. The presentation is just as ambitious, with rotatable 3D environments you can jump and climb through, anime cutscenes produced by Production I.G and a sweeping score by Yasunori Mitsuda, from the Celtic warmth of its quieter themes to the closing song "Small Two of Pieces."
Its ambition outran its schedule, and famously so: much of the second disc tells its story through narrated scenes rather than full gameplay. That has only added to the legend. Takahashi went on to found Monolith Soft, the studio behind Xenosaga and the Xenoblade Chronicles series, which makes Xenogears the root of that whole family tree. Playing it on a PlayStation today, you can feel Square reaching for something enormous, and the conversation about what it all means is still going a quarter century later.
