Item Description

The first time a Skell takes to the sky over Mira, the whole planet opens up beneath you. Xenoblade Chronicles X builds toward that moment for dozens of hours, and when it finally comes it changes how you see every continent you have already crossed on foot.

Monolith Soft's 2015 Wii U epic, published by Nintendo, opens with Earth destroyed in the crossfire of an alien war and the colony ark White Whale crash-landing on the uncharted planet Mira. You play a custom-built avatar, pulled from a stasis pod by the BLADE soldier Elma and put to work defending New Los Angeles, the city that survived the crash, while BLADE searches the planet for the Lifehold, the module carrying the rest of the colonists. Mira is split into five continents, from the grassy plains of Primordia and the glowing jungles of Noctilum to the deserts of Oblivia, the strange white landscapes of Sylvalum and the volcanic Cauldros. It is enormous for its era, and its wildlife ranges from grazing herds to towering beasts that ignore you right up until they very much don't.

Combat builds on the original Xenoblade's real-time auto-attacks and cooldown-based Arts, giving every character both a melee and a ranged weapon, adding Soul Voices that reward responding to your teammates' calls, and capping it with Overdrive for long, high-damage combos. Joining one of BLADE's divisions, planting FrontierNav data probes across the map shown on the GamePad, and working through affinity missions with a cast that includes the teenage engineer Lin and the Nopon Tatsu give exploration real purpose. Then come the Skells, mechs roughly four times a person's height that transform into vehicles, carry their own weapons and gear, and eventually fly. Hiroyuki Sawano's soundtrack, swinging between rock, rap and orchestral bombast, is as loud and distinctive as the setting.

Tetsuya Takahashi's team built one of the most technically ambitious games on the Wii U, and it stayed exclusive to the console for nearly a decade until Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition reached Switch in 2025. The Wii U disc is the original form of that adventure, released between Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Its online squad features ended with the Wii U's network, but the story and the planet never depended on them, and a single save can easily absorb a hundred hours or more.

About the game

Xenoblade Chronicles X is an action role-playing video game and part of the Xeno series, serving as a spiritual successor to Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii. Similar to the original, the game is an open-world role-playing video game with an emphasis on exploration. Traveling can take place on foot or in large humanoid robots, approximately four times the height of the average playable character, called "Skells" ("Dolls" in the Japanese version), that the player may opt to control. The Skells can fly, traverse water, and transform into vehicles such as motorcycles or tanks. Aerial battles will also take place in the game.
