Flying for the Luftwaffe or the Soviet air force is something most World War II flight games never offered, and WWII Aces puts both on the table alongside the RAF. Developed by Slovak studio Arcade Moon and published by Destineer for the Wii in 2008, it is a straightforward arcade flier that lets you bank, roll and loop with flicks of the Wii Remote, using any of three control schemes.
The campaign stretches across more than 70 missions, ranging from frantic dogfights to strategic bombing runs, air support and paratrooper drops, with battles that include Dunkirk and the Battle of the Bulge. Each nation brings four aircraft, a fighter, a dive bomber, a heavy bomber and a special project plane, for twelve in total, so you can go from chasing Bf-109s in a Spitfire to screaming down on a target in a Ju-87 Stuka or hauling a payload in a He-111. Missions can be flown solo or with a friend, and there is head-to-head split-screen dogfighting too.
Critics were hard on it in 2008, citing touchy controls and plain visuals, and it plays best taken for what it is: a quick, pick-up-and-fly shooter rather than a simulator. Its appeal today lies in that unusual three-nation roster and the novelty of steering a Stuka with a wave of the hand, which makes it an interesting companion piece to Blazing Angels on a Wii shelf of WWII aviation games.
Guns blazing, the Messerschmitt Bf-109 screams through the clouds toward you. Instinctively, you barrel-roll out of the way, hot lead missing your Spitfire by millimeters. You bank right, flank him and open fire. •Unleash complex acrobatic flight tricks with a simple flick of the Wii Remote ™. Roll, loop, dodge and shoot like an ace with three distinct control schemes. •Fly in over 70 historical WWII missions, including strategic bombing, paratrooper drops, frantic dogfights, and more. •Get behind the guns of 12 legendary planes like the Spitfire, Ju-87 Stuka, Mosquito and He-111. Fly for the RAF, Soviet Air Force, or even the Luftwaffe. •Tackle missions alone or fly with a friend. Or, go head-to-head in competitive split-screen multiplayer.
