Item Description

Hulk Hogan, André the Giant, Randy "Macho Man" Savage, Ted DiBiase, Bam Bam Bigelow and The Honky Tonk Man: that was the WWF in a nutshell at the end of the 1980s, and WWF WrestleMania put all six on the NES. Developed by Rare and published by Acclaim, it was the first WWF-licensed game for Nintendo's console, and for a generation of kids it was simply the wrestling game.

Anyone can grab a controller and start brawling with punches, kicks and grapples, but each wrestler has his own tailored move set, and the details are pure WWF. Only Hulk Hogan can body-slam André, a rule every fan of the era understood instantly, and each competitor has his own power-up icon that occasionally appears in the ring for him alone to grab.

The modes are where it shines as a party game. Exhibition matches let two players go head-to-head, the single-player tournament sends your chosen wrestler through the other five, and the multiplayer tournament lets up to six friends each claim a wrestler and battle through a round-robin of fifteen matches, with the best record taking the title. Rare's David Wise handled the music.

It set the template for the Acclaim WWF games that followed, starting with Rare's own WrestleMania Challenge, and its chunky sprites capture the larger-than-life look of the Hulkamania era. The real appeal is the fantasy it sold: picking Hogan, getting the crowd behind you and finally slamming André, just like WrestleMania III.
