Game + manual: the cartridge and its manual, no box. This is the 5-screw cartridge variant. The cartridge shows moderate cosmetic wear, and the manual is intact with some creasing and wear. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Mario cannot jump in Wrecking Crew, and that single rule changes everything. Instead of leaping over trouble, he works a demolition site in a hard hat with an oversized hammer, climbing ladders and smashing walls, and every stage becomes a puzzle about the order in which things come down. Swing at the wrong wall and you can strand him on a ledge with no route back to the bricks you still need.
There are 100 phases to clear, each a scaffold of walls, ladders, pillars, doors and bombs. The bombs are the clever part, since one well-placed hit can bring down neighboring walls in a satisfying chain, and planning a big collapse feels great even now. Gotcha Wrenches and Eggplant Men patrol the girders, fireballs drift across the screen, and Foreman Spike, Mario's scheming rival, turns up to make the job harder. Mario has no way to fight back directly, so positioning and timing are everything, at least until a hidden golden hammer tips the odds his way. A second player can step in as Luigi.
It also handed players a level editor at a time when that was almost unheard of on a home console. Design mode lets you build your own phases from the same parts Nintendo used. In Japan, a Famicom keyboard and Data Recorder could save those creations to cassette, but those accessories never came to North America, so on the NES every design lasts only until the power goes off. Sketching out a fiendish layout for a friend and watching them struggle through it was a fine way to spend an afternoon anyway.
Wrecking Crew launched alongside the NES in North America in 1985, the same year as Super Mario Bros., yet it is built on a completely different idea of what a Mario game could be: slower, more deliberate and more about thinking than reflexes. That makes it a fascinating counterpoint to its famous sibling and a favorite among puzzle fans. The concept returned years later in Wrecking Crew '98 on the Super Famicom, but this is the original blueprint, from the very first wave of Nintendo's console in America.
Wrecking Crew is a platform action game for one or two players. The player controls Mario (Player 2 as Luigi) working on a demolition site. The goal is to break down all of the stone walls on each stage. The game features a custom level maker, where players can make their own Wrecking Crew levels. The game had the ability to save those custom levels. However, the required peripherals (the keyboard and Data Recorder accessories) were released only in Japan.
