Item Description
Picture Bust-a-Move, then hand the shooter a Worms bazooka and set them adrift in a little boat. That is Worms Blast, Team17's left turn from turn-based artillery into fast puzzle action. A hexagonal grid of colored blocks hangs overhead, the water bobs below, and unlike Puzzle Bobble's fixed launcher, your character can sail left and right to line up the shot.
The Worms DNA is everywhere. Hold the fire button to build power, then lob shots in a long arc to reach awkward pockets of the grid. Hit a block of the same color as your missile, or a rainbow block, and the whole connected cluster vanishes, sending anything that was hanging from it crashing into the sea. Hit the wrong color and you repaint it instead, which turns every miss into a new problem. Weapon crates add grenades, dynamite and other familiar mayhem, and in single player there are no walls to bank off: fire off-screen and a cannonball, a weight or even a fridge drops onto your head. Nine characters, three of them unlockable and many drawn from the series' famous animal weapons, each pilot a boat with its own speed, health and handling.
Puzzle mode sends you across a world map toward a volcano through 60 missions that go well beyond clearing the screen, like shooting down spaceships built from blocks or dodging a snake of blocks that slithers around the playfield. Head-to-head split-screen is where it gets loud: modes like Deathmatch, Tide Trial and Star Race, a barrier that opens now and then so you can fire straight at your rival, and a BLAST meter that rewards big chain reactions with a burst of crate-dropping bonus targets.
Reviews were mixed, and critics warned that its precision demands can be punishing. Players who enjoy a stiff challenge see that as the hook, and for a second player on the couch it is a chaotic, competitive oddity: the Worms spin-off that proved the series' sense of humor works just as well in a falling-block duel.
