Somewhere in gaming history there is a friendship that ended over a Holy Hand Grenade, its choir singing "Hallelujah" as it bounced past a carefully placed girder. Worms Armageddon, Team17's 1999 masterpiece, is where the series' turn-based mayhem reached its peak, and plenty of players still consider it the best Worms ever made. The 2024 Anniversary Edition brings that game to modern consoles for its 25th birthday.

The rules are simple and endlessly elastic. Teams of worms take turns on a destructible landscape, with a strict timer and the wind tugging every shot, and each turn is a little puzzle of angle, power and pure spite. The arsenal is the stuff of legend: banana bombs, the Super Sheep, the Concrete Donkey, the Old Woman, airstrikes and the French Sheep Strike, plus the Ninja Rope, a utility so deep that whole communities formed around mastering it. In all there are dozens of weapons and tools, and a toggle-heavy options menu lets you turn matches into anything from a tidy duel to total chaos.

There is a full solo side, too, with a campaign of missions, training challenges and single-player deathmatches against the CPU. The famous voice banks are part of the charm, with a whole cast of comedy accents and personalities shouting taunts as worms take aim. Pass-the-controller local multiplayer works beautifully because the game is turn-based, which makes it one of the easiest party games on Switch to hand around a room.

Team17 built the Anniversary Edition for modern hardware, with a refreshed presentation and extras celebrating the series' history. If you lost late nights to this game on a PC or PlayStation in 1999, this is the way to bring it back on a modern console.
