The Pandaren had been part of Warcraft lore for years, ever since Chen Stormstout wandered into Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne as a brewmaster hero for hire, but Mists of Pandaria finally gave them a homeland. Blizzard's fourth World of Warcraft expansion, released in 2012, lifted the fog from a hidden continent of jade forests, terraced farms and mountain monasteries, and it gave Azeroth one of its most distinctive and serene settings after the apocalyptic fire of Cataclysm.

New Pandaren characters begin on the Wandering Isle, a floating island on the back of the giant turtle Shen-zin Su, and decide at the end of that journey whether to join the Alliance or the Horde, a first for any race in the game. The expansion also introduced the Monk, a martial-arts class that could tank as a Brewmaster, heal as a Mistweaver or fight as a Windwalker. Around that came a long list of additions: a level cap raised to 90, a rebuilt talent system, pet battles that turned collectible companions into a full side game, small-group scenarios and timed challenge-mode dungeons.

Pandaria itself is the star. The Jade Forest, the Valley of the Four Winds, Kun-Lai Summit, the Townlong Steppes, the Dread Wastes and the Vale of Eternal Blossoms each have their own mood, and beneath their beauty lurk the Sha, malevolent manifestations of fear, anger and despair. The war between the Alliance and Horde follows players onto these shores, and the expansion's story would eventually build to the Siege of Orgrimmar and the downfall of Garrosh Hellscream.

Blizzard's Collector's Editions are a big-box tradition that many fans hold onto long after the expansion itself is installed, and this one marks the expansion that many players still name as an underrated high point of World of Warcraft. If you have fond memories of your first Monk, a long evening of pet battles or the view from the Vale, this is the physical keepsake of that era of Azeroth, for PC and Mac.
