Picture a party of monsters piled one on top of another like a living totem pole, fighting as a single unit. That is the big idea behind World of Final Fantasy, and it is as delightful as it sounds. Square Enix's 2016 spin-off, developed with Tose and directed by Hiroki Chiba, turns decades of Final Fantasy creatures into Mirages you can tame, raise and stack, all wrapped in a playful storybook adventure that celebrates the whole series.

You play as twins Lann and Reynn, a reckless younger brother and his cautious older sister who have lost their memories. The mysterious Enna Kros sends them from the quiet hub of Nine Wood Hills into Grymoire, a world where locations from across Final Fantasy history are merged together, with the creature Tama as their guide. Grymoire's residents are the chibi Lilikins, and the twins can switch between their full-size Jiant forms and Lilikin forms, a trick that matters in battle and in environmental puzzles alike. Along the way, famous faces from across the franchise turn up in charming miniature.

The stacking system is where the strategy lives. Stacked Mirages combine their stats and abilities, but a stacked party takes fewer turns, so deciding when to build tall and how to pair elemental skills keeps fights interesting deep into the game. Capturing new Mirages, discovering the alternate forms they can grow into and tracking down rarer creatures becomes a compulsive side game in the best monster-collecting tradition. Masashi Hamauzu, composer of Final Fantasy XIII, wrote most of the score, mixing new themes with nods to the series' musical history.

Reviewers praised the visual style and the stacking mechanic, even if some found the pacing slow, and the game went on to sell more than 900,000 copies by 2018. On the Vita it feels right at home: a bright, cheerful turn-based RPG that works in short bursts or long weekends, and a love letter to Final Fantasy that rewards every bit of series knowledge you bring to it.
