The town of Isenstadt is locked down by the SS, and something far stranger than an occupying army is happening beneath it. Wolfenstein drops B.J. Blazkowicz into that town with the Thule Medallion, an occult relic that lets him slip into the Veil, a shadowy parallel dimension the Nazis are trying to harness for their war. Raven Software's 2009 shooter, published by Activision, picks up the pulpy blend of World War II firepower and supernatural horror from Return to Castle Wolfenstein and gives it a new hub-based structure.
Isenstadt works as a central hub you return to between missions. Two resistance groups send you out on jobs, the Kreisau Circle with its fighters and the Golden Dawn with its scholars of the occult, and the gold you collect buys upgrades on the black market: scopes, silencers, bigger magazines and attachments for the experimental energy weapons you take from the enemy. Exploring the town's streets and rooftops for hidden gold and intel gives the campaign a sense of place that straight corridor shooters often lack.
The Veil is what sets it apart. Entering it reveals hidden paths and weak points and lights up enemies, and as the medallion grows stronger B.J. learns to slow time with Mire, absorb fire with a protective Shield and hit harder with Empower. The catch is that every power drains the medallion's energy, so you are constantly hunting for the hidden pockets of Veil energy that recharge it while fighting through soldiers, elite troops and nightmarish creatures. Juggling powers and an arsenal of MP40s, Kar98 rifles and occult weaponry gives firefights a rhythm of their own.
Wolfenstein sits between the classic era of the series and MachineGames' 2014 reboot, The New Order, and it is the last entry to carry the full Return to Castle Wolfenstein flavor of B.J. as a pulp hero battling the occult. It shipped with online multiplayer, now long offline, but the campaign is the heart of it, and it is an overlooked chapter well worth revisiting on PS3.
Wolfenstein is the direct sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Spear of Destiny/Wolfenstein RPG. It featured a "re-imagined" disguised dark-haired B.J. Blazkowicz, retaining the unshaven look seen in Return to Castle Wolfenstein and dressed in civilian clothes rather than his usual military uniform. The game mainly consists of the player shooting his way through hordes of different types of Nazis, ranging from normal soldier to ninjas. To deal with the large amount of enemies, the player has access to many typical WWII-weapons like the German MP40 or K98 rifle. In addition, during the course of the game he finds the medallion and learns four powers. While at first entering the Veil only allows him so see enemies more clearly and use strange flying creatures as bombs, he is later able to slow down time, surround himself with a protective shield or make himself stronger. However, the medallion's powers drain its energy, which needs to be refilled at power-spots that are nearly invisible in the real world.
