Item Description

Every dungeon in Wizard of Wor is a trap that tightens as you fight. You drop into a maze as a lone Worrior, blaster ready, and start clearing out the monsters that prowl its corridors, knowing that every one you kill makes room for something worse.

The escalation is the genius of the design. Burwors give way to Garwors, Garwors to Thorwors, and the deeper you go, the more often monsters turn invisible, leaving the radar scanner at the bottom of the screen as your only way to track them. Clear a dungeon and the Worluk may appear, trying to escape rather than fight; shoot it before it gets away and the next dungeon pays double. Then, sometimes, the Wizard himself shows up, teleporting around the maze for a big score if you can corner him. Mazes vary from open pits to layouts with tunnels to duck into, and escape doors on the sides offer a quick way out of a tight spot.

The original was a 1981 Midway arcade game from Dave Nutting Associates, and CBS Electronics brought it to the Atari 2600 in late 1982. The arcade's synthesized voice taunts were beyond the console, but the port keeps the cabinet's core loop of thinning ranks, vanishing monsters and radar-guided hunting that makes every dungeon so tense.

The best part survived intact: two players hunting at the same time, free to team up against the Wizard or turn their blasters on each other, since each player's shots can hit the other. That mix of cooperation and betrayal is what keeps a second joystick plugged in long after the first game is over.

About the game

Wizard of Wor is an arcade shooter played from a top-down point of view. The player controls a warrior who is trapped in a dungeon. The goal is to earn as many points as possible by shooting the numerous enemy creatures which wander about the maze like corridors. The creatures wander about at various speeds, may shoot darts at the player, and some even have the ability to disappear temporarily. At the bottom of the screen the player has a radar which can be used to locate creatures that are invisible. When the the player completes a maze, a Worluk sometimes appears. This creature moves rapidly and will only be on the screen momentarily. If the player destroys the creature before it escapes, the next dungeon will become a double score dungeon and all creatures will be worth twice as many points. Occasionally the Wizard of Wor himself may appear! He moves quickly and can teleport around the maze. If they destroy him, the player will earn a large amount of points. The game may be played by one player or two players simultaneously.
