Somewhere in war-torn Velen, a drunken, violent lord called the Bloody Baron asks Geralt of Rivia to find his missing wife and daughter, and what follows is one of the finest quests ever written for a video game: a story of grief, guilt and a cursed creature born of the Baron's own sins that refuses to offer easy answers. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is full of moments like that, which is why CD Projekt Red's 2015 epic is still the open-world RPG others get measured against.

Geralt is searching for Ciri, the adopted daughter he trained as a witcher, who is being hunted across worlds by the spectral riders of the Wild Hunt. The trail runs from the muddy villages of Velen to the sprawling free city of Novigrad and the wind-battered Skellige Isles, with Yennefer, Triss and a cast of old friends drawn back into his orbit. Between story beats he takes witcher contracts, studies monster weaknesses, brews potions, mixes swordplay with magical Signs and plays Gwent, the tavern card game so addictive it later became a standalone game. Choices rarely come down to good versus evil; more often they are the lesser of two bad options, with consequences that surface hours later.

The Complete Edition pairs the base game with both expansions. Hearts of Stone sets Geralt against the sinister Gaunter O'Dimm in a tight, devilish tale built around the tragic nobleman Olgierd von Everec, and Blood and Wine carries him to the sunlit duchy of Toussaint for a vampire mystery and a farewell that many players rank among the best expansions ever made. On PS5, the next-gen version adds Performance and Ray Tracing modes, faster loading, Photo Mode, quick Sign casting, and new items and a quest inspired by the Netflix series.

Marcin Przybyłowicz's folk-tinged score ties it all together, and the game swept Game of the Year honors in 2015. If you have never visited Geralt's world, or last played it years ago on older hardware, this is the version to sink a hundred hours into.
