The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is full of moments like these, which is why so many players still rank it among the greatest role-playing games ever made. CD Projekt Red's 2015 epic follows Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster hunter for hire, across a war-torn continent in search of Ciri, his adopted daughter, who is being hunted by the spectral riders of the Wild Hunt.
The world is enormous and astonishingly varied. The war-ravaged swamps of Velen are full of desperate villagers and ancient witches, the free city of Novigrad hides its mages from the zealots of the Church of the Eternal Fire, and the windswept islands of Skellige feel like a Norse saga come to life. Very little of it is filler. Side quests that look like simple errands routinely turn into stories as memorable as the main plot, and choices made dozens of hours earlier come back to decide the fate of characters and entire regions.
Combat blends swordplay with preparation, and that is what makes Geralt feel like a professional rather than a generic hero. He carries a steel sword for men and a silver one for monsters, casts Signs such as the fiery Igni and the protective Quen, and brews potions, blade oils and bombs from herbs gathered in the wild. His Witcher Senses turn hunts into detective work, following blood trails and scents to learn which beast he is facing and how to beat it. And when it is time for a break, Gwent, the in-world card game, proved so addictive that it later spun off into a standalone game.
The supporting cast, from the sorceresses Yennefer and Triss to the bard Dandelion and the dwarf Zoltan, brings warmth and humor between the darkness, and Marcin Przybyłowicz's folk-tinged score makes every ride across the countryside feel like part of the story. The Witcher 3 swept Game of the Year honors in 2015, including at The Game Awards, and on Xbox One it is the complete original adventure on disc, a game that rewards slowing down, taking every contract and seeing exactly where Geralt's road leads.
