Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Before the sealed circuits and corporate teams of the classic Wipeout era, anti-gravity racing was a rough experiment run through city streets. Wipeout 2048 goes back to that beginning. Set in the first three seasons of the Anti-Gravity Racing Championships, from 2048 to 2050, it is a prequel to the 1995 original, and its tracks thread through the skyscrapers, plazas and half-finished highways of a near-future city, giving the series a grounded, near-future look it had never had before.

It was also the PlayStation Vita's launch showpiece. Studio Liverpool, the team that created Wipeout, developed it for the system's debut, and the result was one of the best-looking games of the Vita's opening months. The ships are rendered in loving detail, the cityscapes stretch into the distance and the sense of speed when you hit a run of boost pads is still exhilarating on the Vita's screen. The controls make good use of the handheld too: twin sticks, optional tilt steering through the gyroscope and touch input for handling pickups.

The campaign is built around pass and elite pass targets, so every event offers a second, harder goal for perfectionists. Ships come in four classes: Speed craft with top-end velocity, nimble Agility ships, armored Fighter ships built for combat races, and Prototype designs that push one stat to an absurd extreme. Event types range from straight races and tournaments to time trials, speed laps and the series' hypnotic Zone mode, a survival challenge where your ship accelerates on its own until the track becomes a blur of color and you are reacting on pure instinct.

Wipeout 2048 was the last game Studio Liverpool made before Sony closed the studio, and the last new mainline entry in the series, which gives it a bittersweet weight for longtime fans. It was also designed for cross-platform racing against PlayStation 3 owners of Wipeout HD Fury. It is the studio's farewell lap and the Vita's first great showpiece in one game, the final word from the team that invented futuristic racing as most players know it.

About the game

The single player campaign progresses through the first three years of the A.G.R.C. (Anti-Gravity Racing Championships): 2048, 2049, and 2050. All events have pass and elite pass targets. Unless the elite pass criteria is met unknowingly, it will only be displayed after a player passes an event. If the player fails to complete an event multiple times in a row, the event can be skipped. Skipping an event will allow the player to move on to the next available event; a player can return to a skipped event at any time in order to try it again.
