Hold the Wii Remote like a sword, tilt your wrist a few degrees, and the blade on screen tilts with you. That small moment of one-to-one precision is what Wii Sports Resort was made to show off. Nintendo built its sequel to Wii Sports around Wii MotionPlus, the add-on that let the Wii Remote read the angle and twist of your hand rather than just a rough swing, and the difference turns the original's charming approximations into sports that reward real finesse.

Everything happens on Wuhu Island, a sunny resort packed with twelve sports and plenty of variations inside them. Swordplay splits into a straight Duel, a Speed Slice contest and a Showdown in which you carve through waves of opponents along the island's paths. Archery asks for a steady hand, Table Tennis responds to actual spin and slices, Frisbee Dog has you throwing a disc for an extremely enthusiastic pup, and Bowling returns with a gloriously silly 100-pin variant. Wakeboarding, Canoeing, Power Cruising, Cycling, Basketball and Golf round out the schedule, and Air Sports lets you skydive or simply pilot a little plane around the whole island, hunting for hidden points of interest at different times of day.

The island turned into a Nintendo landmark. Wuhu came back in Pilotwings Resort and Mario Kart 7 and later became a stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, which tells you how fondly players remember the place. Wii Sports Resort itself sold more than 30 million copies, one of the biggest hits of its generation and the main reason so many households ended up with MotionPlus-ready remotes in the drawer.

The cardboard-sleeve release is the version Nintendo packed in with Wii consoles after Resort joined the system bundle, so it is the copy countless families actually unwrapped alongside their Wii. Set it up with MotionPlus-equipped remotes, pass one to a sibling, and a Swordplay duel on the wooden platform or a tense table tennis rally still turns competitive within minutes. It is the Wii's motion controls finally doing exactly what the 2006 commercials promised.
