Item Description

Few video games have been played in retirement-home bowling leagues, on morning news segments and at family holidays by people who had never held a controller, but Wii Sports managed all three. Nintendo's launch showcase for the Wii came packed with the console in North America and Europe, and it became the system's ambassador: hand someone a Wii Remote, tell them to swing it like a tennis racket, and they understood the whole idea of the Wii in about five seconds.

Each of its five sports turns a real motion into play. Tennis is always doubles, with your Mii's footwork handled automatically so all you think about is timing and angle. Bowling reads the twist of your wrist for spin and quickly became the game's crown jewel, the event that kept living rooms up past midnight. Baseball splits pitching and batting, Golf offers nine holes and a feel for power that takes real practice, and Boxing adds the Nunchuk so both fists get a workout. Everyone steps in as their own Mii, which made beating Grandpa's lookalike far more satisfying than any stock character could.

There is more to chase underneath than people tend to remember. Every sport tracks a skill rating, and pushing past 1,000 points earns pro status, while Training mode offers three challenges per sport, including the Power Throws bowling drill that keeps adding pins until 91 of them fill the lane. The daily Wii Fitness test strings together three random challenges and hands you a cheeky Wii Fitness Age, and Kazumi Totaka's breezy menu music is instantly recognizable to an entire generation of players.

Wii Sports went on to sell more than 80 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games of all time, and its influence on motion controls and casual play rippled through the industry for years afterward. On original hardware, with a Wii Remote in hand and a few people crowded around the TV, it still turns a quiet evening into a bowling tournament. It is the game a Wii library starts with.

About the game

Wii Sports is a sports simulation game built around the motion controls of the Wii Remote. It collects five sports, tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing, played by moving the controller to mimic real actions such as swinging a racket or rolling a ball. The rules are simplified for accessibility, and players compete against the computer or each other, using customizable avatars. Additional training and fitness modes let players practice individual skills and track their progress over time.
