Item Description
The Dreamcast was built for the internet from day one, with a modem inside every console rather than sold as an add-on, and Sega's Web Browser software was the key that opened that door. In North America the console shipped with a 56K modem, and this disc is what turned it into a living-room internet terminal.
Load it up and the Dreamcast became something no Sega console had been out of the box: a way to set up a dial-up account and browse web pages on the family television, navigating with the controller or typing on the Dreamcast keyboard peripheral. The browser was developed for Sega by Planetweb, and the same built-in modem soon carried online games like ChuChu Rocket! and Phantasy Star Online.
It is not a game, and the dial-up services it was built around, including Sega's own SegaNet, are long gone. That is exactly what makes it interesting to collect. It documents Sega's bet that a game console could be a household's window onto the web years before smartphones and smart TVs made the idea ordinary, and next to Phantasy Star Online it completes the story of the Dreamcast as the console that treated going online as standard equipment.
