Item Description

Party time, excellent. Before Radical Entertainment went on to make The Simpsons: Hit & Run, the Vancouver studio took Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, the public-access heroes of Saturday Night Live and the 1992 hit film, and dropped them into a Game Boy platformer. Published by THQ in 1993, it is a wonderfully strange time capsule from the moment when Wayne's World catchphrases were everywhere.

Both Wayne and Garth are playable, and the story loosely retraces the movie across a run of side-scrolling stages, putting the film's heroes and their hometown hangouts on the tiny monochrome screen. Radical developed the NES version alongside it, and the handheld cartridge reached North American stores in November 1993, letting the two best friends from Aurora, Illinois party on wherever you took your Game Boy.

It is not the most polished platformer on the system, and its appeal today is as much about its quirks as its gameplay: the strangeness of squeezing a talk-show comedy into a side-scroller, the film's characters rendered as a handful of pixels, and the very era-specific confidence that a public-access TV show could anchor a Game Boy action game.

For collectors of early-'90s pop culture, SNL memorabilia or the wild world of movie-licensed Game Boy games, it is a fun and very specific artifact, the kind of cartridge that could only have existed in 1993.

About the game

Wayne's World is an adventure game based on the movie with the same name. The game itself is a classic point and click adventure, and should not be confused with the platform game based on the movie. You play both Wayne and Garth, and you can switch between them at any time. The plot is simple; In an attempt to save their tv-show, Wayne and Garth decide to hold a pizza-thon (a charity show with a pizza-theme) in order to raise money. In order to be able to hold the pizza-thon Wayne and Garth must embark on several quests to collect items and hire people they need for the show. The adventure includes participating in babe-jeopardy, joining a biker's gang and baking pizza. The graphics are in 2D and the sound contains several samples from the movie.
