Item Description

A starving rōnin collapses at the gate of Amahara, a bustling trading town on an island in late Edo Japan. A little girl shares her riceball with him, he gets back on his feet, and from that moment every choice is yours. Way of the Samurai 2, developed by Acquire, the studio that made the original Tenchu, and released in North America by Capcom, is a prequel to the first Way of the Samurai and doubles down on its central idea: a small, living town where your sword arm decides who rises and who falls.

Amahara is caught between the magistrate's office and the Aoto gang, with ordinary townsfolk squeezed in the middle, and everyone has an agenda. You can side with the law, throw in with the gang, help the people being crushed between them, or simply walk out of town before anything starts. Characters keep their own schedules and quests run on the clock, so repeat visits teach you where to be and when, and the number of possible endings is unusually large for a console game. Some are over in minutes; others come only after long chains of choices.

Swordplay is at the core. The game offers more than 60 swords, each with its own feel, and nearly every weapon carries stance-breaker attacks, with instant-kill techniques adding a deadly finishing option. Dojima the blacksmith returns from the first game to strengthen your blades, the Appraise feature can make a blade more powerful once you meet its requirements, and swords have durability, so careless fighting can break a favorite and careful play keeps it sharp. Collecting and upgrading the right blade becomes its own long-term goal.

Reviews in 2004 were mixed, but the game has earned a loyal following for exactly what it tried: freedom, consequence and replay value in a compact world. It paved the way for Way of the Samurai 3 and 4, and on PS2 it is an offbeat samurai sandbox that rewards players willing to poke at its edges and see how many different stories Amahara can tell.
