Item Description
Marcus Holloway gets flagged by a predictive algorithm for a crime he didn't commit, and his answer is to break into the company that built it and delete himself from the system. That opening sets the tone for Watch Dogs 2. Where the first game was a brooding revenge story, this sequel is loud, funny and gleefully anti-establishment, a heist caper about a crew of young hackers taking on the tech giants of the San Francisco Bay Area with drones, memes and an awful lot of nerve.
The hacking is the star, and Ubisoft Montreal widened it considerably. Marcus can still change traffic lights and burst pipes, but now he can seize control of cars, forklifts and cranes, set off chaos with a tap of a button, and scout or even finish whole missions remotely. A quadcopter drone handles aerial recon, while the little RC Jumper car rolls into restricted areas to trigger hacks and grab files without Marcus ever stepping inside. When things go loud there are 3D-printed weapons from the DedSec hackerspace, but the improvised Thunder Ball, a billiard ball on a bungee cord, says everything about the game's sense of humor.
The crew gives it heart. Wrench, with his LED mask that flashes emoji-style eyes, is the scene-stealer, while Sitara, Josh and Horatio round out a gang that feels like real friends rather than mission dispensers. Their targets are thinly veiled send-ups of Silicon Valley: a search giant called Nudle, a social network named !nvite and a slick self-help cult called New Dawn. Missions grow DedSec's follower count, and the open world stretches from San Francisco's hills to Oakland's streets and the glass campuses of Silicon Valley, a fun map to simply drive around and photograph.
Watch Dogs 2 was also built around seamless online play, with co-op operations and hacker invasions that dropped other players into your city, though the single-player campaign is where most of the memories live. Critics and players broadly agreed it was a big step up from the 2014 original, and it is the entry many fans point to as the series at its most confident and colorful. On PlayStation 4 it is the Watch Dogs to reach for when you want the sandbox at its most playful.
