Item Description
Two red mana buys a 1/1 with double strike and a habit of dragging more Goblins into the fight. Whenever Warren Instigator deals damage to an opponent, you may put a Goblin creature card from your hand onto the battlefield. Because double strike deals damage twice, an unblocked Instigator triggers twice in a single combat, so one good attack can drop two Goblins straight from your hand into play without casting them.
That is exactly what Goblin decks want. It cheats out expensive Goblins before you could normally afford them, it keeps the pressure building turn after turn, and it gets even better with anything that gives it evasion so the triggers keep coming. In Commander it slots neatly into Krenko, Mob Boss and other Goblin typal builds, where a hand full of Goblins is normal and every free deployment pushes the swarm further ahead. Since those Goblins are put onto the battlefield rather than cast, counterspells can't stop them.
Warren Instigator debuted as a mythic rare in Zendikar in 2009. This is the Secret Lair Drop showcase printing, collector number 157, illustrated by Matteo Bassini, in foil, a fresh look for a Goblin that has been starting trouble for years.
