Wario does not tiptoe around enemies or line up a careful jump on their heads. He grabs them. Wario World gave Nintendo's greediest antihero his first full 3D adventure, and Nintendo handed it to Treasure, the studio behind Gunstar Heroes, Sin and Punishment and Ikaruga. The result plays less like a Mario game in yellow overalls and more like an arcade brawler that happens to have platforms in it, which is exactly why it feels so different from everything else on the GameCube.
The trouble starts in Wario's own vault, where a cursed black jewel wakes up, turns his hoard into monsters and warps his brand-new castle into four strange worlds: Excitement Central, Spooktastic World, Thrillsville and Sparkle Land. Wario answers with punches, dash attacks and ground pounds, but the real fun comes once an enemy is stunned. Pick it up and you can Piledriver it into the floor, whirl it around in a Wild Swing-Ding to bowl over everything nearby, or use it to work the switches and spinning platforms the levels are built around. Most of the bosses can only be hurt with these Mad Moves, so every big fight becomes a wrestling match. Hyper Suction lets Wario inhale nearby coins and garlic, and garlic is what refills his hearts.
Each of the eight levels, from Greenhorn Forest and Horror Manor to Wonky Circus, Shivering Mountains and the puzzling Mirror Mansion, is dense with things to find. Five caged Spritelings wait to be rescued, eight treasures hide behind colored button puzzles, red diamonds lurk in trapdoor sub-areas and unlock the path to the boss, and gold statue pieces add to Wario's health. How many Spritelings you save even decides what kind of castle Wario ends up with, from a sad plant-built shack to a palace full of treasure.
There is a neat bonus for completionists as well: clearing out a level's treasures unlocks sets of WarioWare, Inc. microgames that the game was designed to send to a Game Boy Advance over the link cable. Wario World is compact, but it is built for replay, and chasing the best ending is the way to see Treasure's knack for punchy, physical action applied to one of Nintendo's loudest characters.
While Wario enjoys the riches from his many adventures, a mysterious black jewel in his trove transforms gems into monsters. Now, Wario must scramble to recover his riches in an alternate world filled with quirky puzzles, swarming enemies, and lots of loot. As Wario, you'll punch, kick, jump, grab monsters and objects, and inhale surrounding coins like a vacuum cleaner. You must cling to 3D balls to fight bosses, find hidden areas through trap doors, and bash your surroundings to uncover secrets.
