Item Description
Wake the Dead is a combat trick that turns your graveyard into an ambush. The black instant costs {X}{B}{B} and can only be cast during combat on an opponent's turn, and it returns X creature cards from your graveyard to the battlefield. They fight for you right then, as surprise blockers that can stonewall an alpha strike, and they are sacrificed at the beginning of the next end step.
That drawback is where the card gets interesting. Every creature you bring back triggers its enters-the-battlefield ability, and every one you sacrifice later triggers death effects, so aristocrats decks with Blood Artist-style payoffs get two rounds of value out of a single spell. Creatures with powerful arrival triggers come back to do their job again, and decks that fill the graveyard can make X enormous in the late game, turning one attack into a disaster for the attacker. It rewards patient players who hold mana up on other people's turns.
This is the Commander 2014 printing, collector number 31, illustrated by Christopher Moeller, in non-foil, from the year Commander decks were led by planeswalker commanders.
