Item Description

Despite the name, there is no headset involved. VR Golf '97 takes its title from VR Sports, the Interplay label that brought it to North America, and underneath is Gremlin Interactive's Actua Golf, part of the same Actua Sports family the Sheffield studio built around fully polygonal 3D. In 1996 that meant real sculpted terrain for every hole, golfers that moved through their swings, and a camera free to follow the ball from several angles, a big step for console golf at the time.

The game is packed with options. Two fictional courses anchor play, and you can take them on in stroke play, match play, skins or four-ball, with mulligans and gimmes available for friendlier rounds. Weather can be set to dry, damp or wet, and you can choose your golfer's outfit and look. The swing itself sticks with a classic timing meter, so anyone raised on earlier golf games will be hitting fairways in minutes, while the game's commentary team includes veteran broadcasters Peter Alliss and Pat O'Brien.

Reviewers of the day were fond of it. GamePro rated the PlayStation version a close competitor to EA's PGA Tour 97, and Electronic Gaming Monthly's reviewers called it addictive, even as some critics found its visuals plain. For players who enjoy the slower rhythm of a sports sim, it is a charming, option-heavy round from the first wave of 3D sports games on PlayStation.

About the game

Actua Golf is a golf simulation with full 3D terrain and characters. It comes with two courses to play at (country and tropical), customizable characters and multi-view shot tracking and action replays. Actua Golf uses similar game controls as older golf titles did. With a swing meter, where you have to time correctly to hit the ball right.
