Item Description

Before Virtua Tennis, most tennis games felt like a wrestling match with the controls. Sega AM3, the team soon renamed Hitmaker, built its 1999 arcade hit around a simple insight: let the game take care of the fiddly parts of movement and stroke selection, and leave the player free to think about placement, angles and timing. The result felt so natural that its Dreamcast conversion in 2000 became one of the console's favorite multiplayer discs almost overnight.

Two buttons do most of the work, a shot and a lob, and the skill lies in getting into position early so you can power up your stroke before the ball arrives. Rallies flow naturally from there: drop a ball short to drag an opponent forward, then lob it over their head, or rush the net behind a deep approach and put the volley away. Every player on the men's-only lineup has a strength of his own: Tim Henman is the volley master, Carlos Moyá hits with power, Thomas Johansson is fast around the court and Yevgeny Kafelnikov has a strong backhand, with Jim Courier, Tommy Haas and Cédric Pioline in the mix and secret stars waiting to be uncovered.

The modes cover every mood. Arcade sends you through five matches on different surfaces to win a tournament, Exhibition lets you tune the rules for singles or doubles with up to four players, and the World Circuit is the long game: you start as the 300th seed and climb the rankings by winning matches and clearing offbeat training challenges, spending your prize money in shops that sell clothing, equipment, new stages and doubles partners.

Virtua Tennis became the template for everything the series did next, from the sequel that added the women's tour to Virtua Tennis 4 in 2011, with the training-minigame career and the emphasis on tactics over reflexes carried through every entry. The Dreamcast original is the formula at its cleanest, quick to learn, endlessly replayable and a perfect excuse to keep four controllers plugged in.
