Movieland is under alien invasion. The Gedow empire and its unseen Black Emperor are after the seven Rainbow Oscars, statuettes that hold the power of the happy ending, and they have already turned Captain Blue into one of them. Viewtiful Joe 2 picks up the moment the first game ends, and this time Joe does not go it alone: Sexy Silvia, his girlfriend and the damsel of the original, steps up as a full partner with VFX powers of her own.

The VFX system is still the star. Joe slows time to a crawl to dodge bullets and hit harder, kicks into Mach Speed to attack in a blur, and zooms the camera in for close-up flair. Silvia trades Mach Speed for Replay, which records her attacks and repeats them three times for triple damage, with the catch that any hit she takes while replaying also counts triple. A single button swaps between the two at any moment, they share one health bar and VFX meter, and many of the puzzles only click once you think in terms of which hero, and which power, the moment needs. Between stages, V-Points buy new moves, upgrades and extra health.

Each chapter is a different movie, and the game has a ball with its genres: a prehistoric film where a Tyrannosaurus soldier named Big John waits, an ancient temple guarded by the narcoleptic golem Flinty Stone, a futuristic set run by the mad scientist Dr. Cranken, a samurai picture where Joe's rival Alastor muscles in, and frozen peaks ruled by Frost Tiger. Clover Studio's cel-shaded comic-book style is as bold as ever, Hideki Kamiya returned to write the story, and the 36 Chambers of Viewtiful offer a separate gauntlet of skill challenges once the credits roll.

Critics loved it, with a Metacritic score in the mid-80s and IGN declaring that “all sequels should be this good,” and the North American GameCube release even arrived a few weeks ahead of the PlayStation 2 version. It also turned out to be the last mainline chapter: the ending clearly sets up a third adventure, but Clover Studio closed in 2007 and its core team went on to form PlatinumGames. That gives this sequel a special place as the final, fullest version of Joe's stylish time-bending action.
