Item Description

Before Atari had a home console, it had Pong, and Video Olympics is where those coin-op bat-and-ball games moved onto the 2600. Released as one of the nine launch titles in September 1977, it collects the Pong family into a single cartridge with 50 games and variations for one to four players, all played with the paddle controllers.

The variety is the fun. Pong and Super Pong sit alongside Pong Doubles and Quadrapong, a four-player free-for-all with a wall to defend on every side. Foozpong stacks your paddles in a column like a foosball rod, while Soccer, Hockey, Basketball, Handball and Volleyball each put a sporting twist on the basic bounce, with Volleyball adding the satisfying option to spike. Robot Pong gives a solo player a computer opponent to beat. Three- and four-player games need a second pair of paddles, which makes this one of the original reasons to own two sets.

Video Olympics was designed and programmed by Joe Decuir, one of the engineers who helped create the Atari VCS hardware itself, and Sears sold it as Pong Sports. Its games drew on Pong-series cabinets Atari had released in arcades earlier in the decade, and the collection fed back into the arcades in 1978 as Tournament Table. Video magazine singled out Volleyball and Robot Pong as standouts.

There is something wonderful about the analog precision of a 2600 paddle on a Pong screen, and this is the cartridge that best captures it. It is the launch-day link between Atari's arcade origins and its home console, and still a great way to settle an argument with three friends.
