Item Description

The race starts on the lamp-lit streets of Paris at night and ends thousands of miles away in Dakar, and everything in between is a test of how well you look after your car. Victory Run turns the famous Paris-Dakar rally into a fast, behind-the-car arcade racer, with the road streaming toward you in the scaling pseudo-3D style of the era and a clock that never lets you ease off.

The clever part happens before you turn a wheel. You set out with a limited stock of spare parts, and how you spread them across the car decides how the later legs go. Drive carelessly and components wear out, so every stage becomes a balance between raw speed and making sure the car is still in one piece by the time the Sahara arrives. That bit of planning gives a straightforward checkpoint racer a layer of strategy most of its arcade contemporaries skipped entirely.

Hudson Soft built Victory Run for the PC Engine in Japan in 1987, and it was part of the TurboGrafx-16's first wave in North America in 1989. It comes from the moment NEC's tiny HuCards were showing what they could do: bright colors, smooth roadside scenery rushing past and a sense of speed that felt like a clear step beyond the 8-bit consoles of the day. The setting shifts from night-time city streets to rolling countryside to open desert straightaways, which gives the long run a real sense of a journey rather than a series of laps.

It is a piece of launch-era TurboGrafx history and a quick, replayable challenge on original hardware, where shaving seconds off a leg while keeping the car alive is every bit as compelling as it was when the console was brand new.
