Item Description
Vexing Devil hands your opponent a choice and makes both answers bad. For a single red mana you get a 4/3, but when it enters, any opponent may have it deal 4 damage to them, in which case you sacrifice it. Either they take 4 straight to the face, or you keep a four-power attacker that dwarfs everything else in the early turns.
That is why red aggro and burn players love it: at worst it hits harder than a Lava Spike, and at best it stays around to swing for 4 every turn. In multiplayer Commander any opponent can volunteer to take the hit, which leads to some entertaining table politics. Lucas Graciano illustrated the card, and its flavor text captures the attitude perfectly: “It's not any fun until someone loses an eye.”
This is the Ultimate Masters printing from 2018, collector number 154, in non-foil. Vexing Devil first appeared in Avacyn Restored in 2012.
