Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Vectorman looked like nothing else on the Genesis when it arrived in October 1995. BlueSky Software built its hero from 23 individually animated sprites, a cluster of glowing orbs that let him bend, flip and recoil with a fluidity that felt closer to a rendered 3D model than a traditional 16-bit character. Sega put serious weight behind it, and Electronic Gaming Monthly and GamePro both named it the best Genesis game of 1995.
The setting has a dark sense of humor. Humanity has abandoned a polluted Earth and left robotic Orbots behind to clean up, but the supervisory robot Raster has been accidentally connected to a nuclear warhead missile and become the tyrannical WarHead, plotting war on humanity's return. Vectorman, away on a mission in space and free of WarHead's control, is the one Orbot left to stop him.
The action is fast and open. Across sixteen levels, many with multiple paths and a time limit, Vectorman fires laser pulses in eight directions and picks up power-ups that change his weapons, while multipliers double his damage. His transformations are the real hook, morphing him into forms such as a drill or a bomb that attack enemies or reshape the terrain, a helicopter that lets him fly and a vehicle built for speed. Fail a level and the game lets you drop to an easier difficulty, though it calls you lame for doing it.
Jon Holland's score aims for a rhythmic, almost danceable techno sound inspired by artists like Kraftwerk, Orbital and The Prodigy, slower and moodier than most 16-bit platformers, and it suits the toxic-planet mood perfectly. A sequel, Vectorman 2, followed in 1996, but the original is the one that showed how much life the Genesis still had as the 32-bit consoles arrived.
By the year 2049, Earth has been turned into a toxic waste dump. Humankind has fled into space leaving behind an army of mechanized “Orbots” to clean up the mess. But when the Orbot leader “WarHead” goes haywire and starts a global revolt against the humans, it falls on the shoulders of the last Orbot loyal to its human masters to save the planet.
