Item Description

More than a thousand years ago, a two-ton war machine fell from the stars, built for nothing but destruction. The five greatest wizards of the age drained its power into five orbs and sealed the armor away. Now the Danek Empire has copied enough of that ancient technology to field an army of mechanical soldiers, and young Sandor sets out to find the orbs and wake the legendary armor of Vay before the empire conquers everything. It is a premise that blends sword-and-sorcery with giant-robot science fiction, and it gives Vay a flavor all its own.

At heart this is a traditional, turn-based console RPG, and an unpretentious one. You explore towns, talk to everyone, push through dungeons and grind your party into shape against more than a hundred kinds of monsters, on a journey that runs from the depths of Magmal Isle to the forbidding heights of Draktyr. What the Sega CD adds is the presentation: animated story scenes with voiced dialogue and a CD-quality soundtrack that lift the big moments well above what a cartridge RPG of the period could offer.

Vay was developed by Hertz in Japan and brought to North America by Working Designs, the small publisher that also localized Lunar: The Silver Star for the Sega CD. Working Designs' scripts were known for their playful, joke-filled personality, and Vay's English version carries that house style, which is a big part of why fans remember it so warmly.

Alongside the Lunar games, Vay is one of the RPGs that gave the Sega CD a real identity beyond full-motion video. It is approachable, charming and refreshingly free of filler systems, a classic quest in the old style with a mechanical twist at its core, and a cornerstone of any Sega CD role-playing shelf.

About the game

It came from space more than a millenium before. Two-tons of advanced technology, programmed only for destruction. The five mightiest wizards of the land joined forces and drew away the power of the battle machine, dividing the power into 5 orbs and sealing the armor away from humanity. Now, the Danek Empire has partially duplicated the fearsome mechanized technology, creating a deadly army of metal warriors programmed for world domination. The only hope for salvation is to find the legendary orbs and restore power to the armor that nearly destroyed the planet more than 1000 years before. Join Sandor as he begins a quest that will take him from the depths of Magmal Isle to the terrifying heights of Draktyr. Fight over 100 types of monsters, explore towns, and enjoy exciting CD animation scenes as you pursue the orbs that will activate the legendary armor of Vay. But, will the armor save your world, or destroy it forever?
