Item Description
Valkyria Chronicles 4 is the sequel that took the series back to what made the original special. After two PSP sequels, Sega and developer Media.Vision returned to the Second Europan War, the same conflict as the first game, but from a new front. Commander Claude Wallace of the Atlantic Federation and his childhood friends from the small town of Hafen are now the soldiers of Squad E, and they are leading a desperate push toward the imperial capital in Operation Northern Cross.
The battle system, BLiTZ, blends turn-based strategy with direct action. Each turn you spend command points to activate a unit, then take direct control, running across the map while enemy soldiers open fire, before stopping to line up a shot. It makes every move feel tense and personal. Scouts, shocktroopers, lancers, engineers and snipers return, and the new grenadier class lobs mortar rounds over cover from long range, opening up fresh ways to plan a turn. Claude himself commands the tank Hafen, named for the squad's hometown, while the snow cruiser Centurion serves as the unit's mobile base across frozen enemy territory.
The story does not shy away from the cost of war. The bonds between Claude, the hot-headed Raz, the sharpshooter Kai and the grenadier Riley give the campaign real heart, while rival commander Minerva Victor and the imperial Valkyria Crymaff keep the pressure on. The CANVAS engine renders it all like a moving watercolor, with sketched shading and comic-book sound effects that pop off the screen, and Hitoshi Sakimoto's score gives the campaign a sweeping, cinematic sound.
Coming about a decade after the original, this is the full-scale console sequel Valkyria fans had waited years for, and it is the only mainline entry in the series released on an Xbox console. Warm, challenging and beautiful, it is a strategy RPG that makes you care about every soldier you send into the field, and it rewards careful planning with some of the most satisfying turn-based battles of its era.
