Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Yuko Asou does not have to carry the fight alone this time. Valis III gives the series' sword-wielding heroine two partners and lets you swap between all three in the middle of a stage, and that one change makes Telenet's anime action series feel more tactical than ever before. Developed by Laser Soft, Telenet's in-house team, the Genesis version was published in North America by Renovation in 1991, putting a full anime fantasy saga on a cartridge at a time when that was still a novelty on American shelves.
The story has a sympathetic edge. King Glames, armed with the sword Leethus, leads the people of the Dark World against Vecanti and Earth because their own planet is being destroyed. Yuko answers with Cham, a demon warrior-maiden who fights with a whip and wants revenge for her father's death, and her own sister Valna, whose wand fires magical blasts. Each heroine has a clear role: Yuko is the strongest fighter, with a chargeable energy wave, while Valna trades raw attack power for the most potent magic in the party.
Switching characters works at any time outside boss fights, and every heroine carries upgradable weapons and spells of lightning, fire and ice, so part of the fun is reading a stage and picking who should lead. Valis III also adds a ground slide, new to the series, which doubles as an attack and gives the action a quicker, more evasive rhythm. A few stages insist on a specific character, usually Yuko, which keeps the swapping from becoming a crutch.
To fit on a Genesis cartridge, the game was reworked rather than simply squeezed. Most of the PC Engine CD original's cutscenes were trimmed, several levels were cut and one new stage was added, while the boss fights and parallax scrolling were improved. Critics at the time praised the visuals and the bosses, even if some found the action repetitive in places. The result is a leaner, action-first take on Yuko's story, and alongside the Genesis releases of the first Valis and Syd of Valis it rounds out a corner of the library that anime-loving Genesis collectors seek out by name.
The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis port of Valis III was released in March 1991 in Japan and later that year in North America. This version has most of the cinematic cutscenes removed. Several levels were removed as well, and a new one was added to this version, while the remaining levels are more similar to each other.
